  • How did the Big House begin?

Before the existence of The Big House, our pastor, Jeff Dunn, was sent on an adventure to Atlanta in September of the year 2000. In Atlanta, God gave Jeff a vision for something BIG and something for kids that made learning about the Bible feel fun and make it like a place to hang out…perhaps a really cool HOUSE?! Jeff shared the vision and the ball went rolling.

Believe it or not the very first Big House ever was completely and totally created and dreamt up by KIDS!... And with God’s help! All these kids ranged from middle school up to college!! These kids were given the vision and had about a month to create it. Within that month things were being dreamt about…like a young, cool couple named Dave and Sandy Nerkel, and a fun, bright living room to hang out in, and lots, and lots, did I mention lots, of crazy kids. A script was written, videos shot, a set designed, a cast casted, 2 dances choreographed, the original Big House dance being one of them, and practices set with less than a week to perform.

On a cool Sunday evening in the middle of November in that year of 2000 the opening words of the theme song, “I don’t know where you lay your head, or where you call your home…” bursted through a simple 2 speaker sound system in a small auditorium in the Wall Building on Coastal Carolina University’s campus. The theme was “Forgiveness” with a scripture from Ephesians 4:32, that almost every member of the show had memorized from many long practices throughout that week. The Big House was given life that day and has been growing up ever since!

How many peeps does it take to put Big House on each week?

Big House has around 100 volunteers total. However from week to week not all 100 are a part of the show. On average, about 75-80 peeps help with a weekly Big House.

How many peeps come to see Big House each week?

Each week Big House has between 200-400 peeps in the audience! We have both BIG (adults) and little (kids) peeps watching the show to learn about God’s love.

How long does it take to put a Big House show together?

Each Big House show is written WAY (although some may say differently) ahead of time! The writers try to stay at least a month ahead with scripts. After a script is written the props team, and music production team work next to get the “pre-show” ready. Then when the week rolls around for the show, some of the teams will have already been working on a song or dance a month in advance, and the cast spends two weeks on learning their script!! So all in all…a month in advance we are working towards future shows and all that time combined is around 40 hours a show! Not too shabby!

Where do you get your ideas from?

Big House is from GOD! (Really! If you sat in one of our creative meetings you’d know that it would only happen because of God because we can’t focus enough for it to be done by us!!) Weekly a creative team meets to dream up crazy ideas! And God is always faithful to give them to us somehow! From the ideas in that meeting all of our scripts are written.

Where can I get a copy of "Paying Your Tithe"?

You can find the song "Paying Your Tithe" by going to www.onewaystreet.com/category/righteous_pop_music it is on Volume 4.

Where does all of the music come from?

We find our music all over the place.. the radio, the internet, kids CD and i-pod collections.  Each Big House Team has amazing leaders who spend time searching and listening to all kinds of Christian music.  The production team has one person that reads the scripts and completes a music list.  This person is the one that finds all the creative transition songs that you hear in between the scenes.
